Annual Report

Children’s Ministries Team

2007

The Children’s Ministries Team is responsible for ministry to infants through 5th grade children.

Mission: Children’s Ministries at First Presbyterian Church exists so children learn that “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so…”

Nursery and Child Care was provided every Sunday from 8:30 am until after the late Worship service.  Julie Malek, the Childcare Attendant, was assisted by numerous teen and adult volunteers.  Childcare was also offered as needed for special events.

Sunday School for grades K-12 was conducted each Sunday, including the summer months.  The first 8 months of the year, “Walk With Me” was the curriculum delivered by individual teachers in two classrooms.  Starting in September, the curriculum changed to “Kid Connection” and was delivered through a team approach.  With “Kid Connection”, Sunday school starts with an assembly of all children, K-5,  that includes singing, stories and drama.  Following the assembly, the children separate by age into two classrooms for the balance of the lesson for that day.  Both “Walk With Me” and “Kid Connection” curriculum are from Faith Alive Christian Resources, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Our Chapel was provided most Sundays during 11:00 am worship services.  It is designed for early elementary children and begins with the “Children’s Moment” during worship.  Then the children move to another room for age appropriate worship and a lesson.

A Harvest Hoedown was conducted, under the leadership of Youth Director Kyle Peters, on October 27 to provide fun day of activity for members’ children and bring neighborhood children into our building.  The event was a success with nearly 50 children attending.

A Christmas Eve program was conducted for the first time in several years under the leadership of Debbie Curran.  New costumes were made by volunteers.  A dramatization of the birth of our Savior was presented by 17 children at the 7:00 pm Christmas Eve service.

Scouting was offered during the week as a program for members’ children and an outreach ministry to children in the neighborhood.  Our church has used Scouting as a ministry since 1938.  Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts meet regularly at our church.

Teacher Training and Planning Workshops were conducted during July and August.  Surveys of the entire congregation, parents of children and Sunday school teachers were conducted to determine what was needed to improve the programs we offer.

2008 Plans include maintaining and improving existing programs as well as adding additional one day events and a Day Camp style vacation Bible school.  Many of the Christian Education wing rooms will be redecorated and painted during 2008.  Additional events and activities will be designed to serve our members’ children and to provide an outreach ministry to the neighborhood around our building.  Youth and Family Ministries Director Kyle Peters will be responsible for giving primary leadership to the additional activities.
