Annual Report MISSIONS COMMITTEE 2007
Committee Members: Melanie Bolender, Session liaison; Dottie Denton; Wendell King; Ann Laudeman; Bruce Malek, Chairman; Nancy Smith; Jan Watson; and Matt Wilbur
What is the purpose of “mission and outreach”? Jesus himself addressed this question many times. Two verses are particularly helpful: |
|
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets." Matt.22:34-40, RSV;
And Jesus came and said to them (referring to his disciples), "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age." Matt.28:18-20, RSV.
In essence, love your neighbor and share the Good News of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, both in our community and throughout the world. One of the ways our church fulfills this ministry is to financially support individuals and organizations committed to these goals. The Mission and Outreach Committee, with the approval of Session, identifies and allocates budgeted funds to supported missions. Reverend Fettig and Session have expressed a need, and committed themselves, to increasing funding to this important work. The 2007 budget was $17,885.00, which was used to support local (43.61%), state and national (20.13%), international (13.70%), Presbytery (20.13%) and miscellaneous (2.43%) ministries, including Hot Meals and the Youth Mission Trip. During the last year, to ensure wise use of the funds entrusted to it, the Mission and Outreach Committee has:
· Continued to review missions previously supported by the Church, and identified new missions, for funding · Revised and implemented use of the Mission Funding Application developed in 2006 to assist the · committee in reviewing requests for financial support · Established a timetable for mailing funding applications and preparing and submitting a proposed budget to Session · Sponsored presentations by funded ministries to provide the congregation with information concerning mission and outreach programs · Prepared a booklet, which will be published in the near future, summarizing funded ministries which are or have been supported by First Presbyterian as an educational tool for both the congregation and visitors to our church
During the last year, a long time member of the committee, Miriam King, found it necessary to resign due to other church commitments. The committee extends its heartfelt thanks to her for her participation and service. If you would like to become involved in this important ministry, or know of a Christian outreach program you would like to see the church support, please contact a committee member or the church administrative assistant, Holly Bredefeld. The committee meets at the church on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm. |

To commemorate 200 years of First Presbyterian service in our community we are kicking off a “Super unbelievable, fantastic ministry.” We are asking for your help in collecting 200 items in the month of May to be given to Interchurch for those in need. This month we are collecting cans of tuna. Generic store brands are fine. Please help us meet our goal! |
